Why do people immediately disregard subjects such as flat earth, without opening their minds/taking time to research?

There are things that are under discussion and need more evidence. Is there a Planet 9 (not Pluto)? There are things that will be nearly impossible to fully understand. Parts of quantum dynamics or what exists outside our universe, for examples. Then there are things that are just wrong. We have all the centuries of research that is needed to know the Earth is an oblate spheroid. Flat Earthers refusing to understand basic math and science is not a reflection on my open-mindedness, but on their obstinance.
